Walking

The Brecon Beacons National Park covers an area of 1347sq km (520 sq miles) with spectacular scenery of mountains, valleys waterfalls and canals. In 2005 the landscape was officially recognised as the most important geological landscape in Europe and awarded European Geopark status.

Walkers can enjoy a range of walks from a stroll along a canal to challenging hikes. Pathways are subject to a programme of continuous improvement.

There are guided walks and events with a wealth of information available from the Tourist Information Centre in Brecon or on www.breconbeacons.org.

Some of the very best walks are along some of the finest ridges in the Brecon Beacons. All are within the capabilities of the average fell walker and offer great days out in the mountains with some of the finest views in Wales. Pen y Fan is the highest summit in the Brecon Beacons, distinctly shaped and recognisable throughout the whole area. Corn Du, very similar in shape and height is Pen y Fan's twin but it's more appropriate to think of them as a twin-peaked summit. www.go4awalk.com

The Brecon Beacon Mountain Centre is the most popular visitor attraction in the National Park.It is some 1100 feet above sea level and the adjacent moorland ridge known as Mynydd Illtyd offers some fine easy to moderately graded walking.
